Puerto Rico is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. While the impacts of Hurricane Maria are still being felt, the majority of the beaches across the island are open for business! It would be impossible for us to pick just one, so we’ve compiled a list of a few of our favorite beaches that we highly recommend adding to your travel itinerary.
Condado Beach – San Juan
The vibe of Condado Beach is sometimes compared to that of Miami’s South Beach. Its fun, vibrant atmosphere is a must-visit destination for tourists. Not just for tourists though, this stunning beach is known to attract local and celebrities alike. Its location is prime for entertainment and is surrounded by some of Puerto Rico’s greatest hotels and restaurants (including Serafina Beach Hotel).
Flamenco Beach – Culebra
Culebra is an island located just a short 20-minute flight or ferry ride from the main island of Puerto Rico and the short trip is well worth the effort. The white fluffy sand on Flamenco Beach is perfect for romantic walks with your special “one”. Calm, gentle waters also make this a great spot for a nice swim.
Pozo de Teodoro – Isabela
The coastal town of Isabela has been gaining popularity recently as a popular surfing destination for beginners, or those who like calmer waters. Isabela is also home to the best natural pools on the island, which are usually full during the winter, and low or empty during summer months. Pozo de Teodoro itself is a wide, typically uncrowded beach with easy access and great snorkeling.
Playa Sucia – Cabo Rojo
This piece of paradise can be described as an all-inclusive beach for nature lovers. The location is simply stunning, and the clear water will take your breath away. The beach itself is surrounded by trails that are perfect for hiking or bird watching or just enjoying the view of the water. There are no oceanfront hotels or services here – so you’ll want to pack some water and snacks if you are going to make a day of it.
Domes Beach – Rincon
Domes Beach might not be ideal for swimming, but it’s certainly a haven for surfers. If surfing isn’t your thing, you can always relax, enjoy the sunset or visit the beachfront restaurants nearby. If you are looking for a fun on-land activity, Rincon has horseback riding tours available that will take you through Domes Beach.
Gilligan’s Island – Guanica
This may not have been the actual site of the filming of Gilligan’s Island, but it is a small Cay we wouldn’t mind getting lost at for a while. Even though there is a minimal sandy area, there are plenty of gazebos, lounge chairs and mangroves to enjoy. Known for its crystal clear and calm water, this is an idyllic destination for relaxing or snorkeling.
Combate Beach – Cabo Rojo
If you are looking for a walk on the beach, this is the spot for you. Combate is the longest beach in Puerto Rico and its picturesque clear water makes it perfect for strolling, swimming and relaxing. During the weekends and summer months, the beach is flooded with locals looking to spend the day with family or friends. There are nearby restaurants for convenient access to dining, as well as plenty of parking available.
Sun Bay Beach – Vieques
This gorgeous beach is located on the island of Vieques and is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico. While Hurricane Maria resulted in extensive damage to the island of Vieques last year, today, there are several businesses that have re-opened and Sun Bay Beach has been cleared for visitors and locals alike. Even though this is a public beach, there is still plenty of room to tie up your hammock and enjoy your day.
Isla Verde – Carolina
The beach and the beachfront restaurants and bars make Isla Verde a top beach destination on the Enchanted Island. There are an abundance of sports and recreational activities to choose from, as well as an array of bars, restaurants, and shops to enjoy.
These are a few of our favorite beaches but spend time in Puerto Rico and we know you’ll find more to add to the list. If you are ready to explore the best beaches the world has to offer, then book your trip today and join us on the Enchanted Isle!
