Festivals and Street Fairs

Festival de la Piña Paradisíaca

What better way to kick off summer than with a pineapple festival? This festival combines kitschy with culture in a block party style celebration. Held in the oceanfront community of La Parguera in the beautiful, little town of Lajas, from June 7th to the 9th, locals and travelers alike come together each year to celebrate this sweet, tropical treat. The Pineapple Festival is the world’s greatest farmer’s market you’ll ever attend. Vendors from across the island offer a variety of foodie approved delicacies, ice-cold beverages, street foods, and — of course — pineapples. Live music, charter boat rentals, and a 5k race with views of the local marina and mangrove coves are sure to provide entertainment for every wanderer.

The daytime activities are perfect for families, while couples and solo travelers will find nearby restaurants and bars open late. Keep the nightlife experience going with a trip to one of Puerto Rico’s ethereal bioluminescent bays. Glass bottom boat rides after dark are a great way to end a long, summer night.

Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol

Experience the culture, cuisine, and art of Puerto Rico’s African heritage. The five-day long party begins on July 25th each year with a sensory overload of folk dancers, native drummers, and a parade of masks. The unique blending of traditional Catholicism with African voodoo and mysticism is distinct to the town of Loiza.

The festival honors Saint James, Loiza’s patron saint, and features three spiritual processions throughout the holiday: Santiago de Los Hombres (Saint James of the Men), Santiago de las Mujeres (Saint James of the Women) and Santiago de Los Niños (Saint James of the Children). Priests reenact the religious saga with elaborate costumes and coconut masks of the fantastical and spooky variety.

Artists and art enthusiasts will enjoy the wide array of booths and vendors. Handmade goods from local artisans make the perfect souvenirs for honoring our friend Saint James.

San Juan International Billfish Tournament

There may be plenty of fish in the sea, but there’s only one International Billfish Tournament in the Caribbean. San Juan’s week-long tag-and-release competition is held throughout August and early September at Club Nautico in Miramar. Legendary blue marlin are the main prize to be caught throughout the week. A great community of deep-sea fishing anglers makes this event a memorable experience for experts and amateurs alike.
